Professor Raja Atreya is a senior physician and head of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Unit at the University Hospital Erlangen, Germany, and professor of Translational Immunology in IBD at Erlangen University, Germany.

He received his MD from the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Germany. He stayed on at the university to work as a physician and subsequently participated in the postgraduate program on antigen-specific immunotherapy. He has received many awards during his career, including the Theodor Frerichs Prize from the German Society for Internal Medicine; the Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaedter Prize for Young Researchers from the Paul Ehrlich Foundation; and the Rising Star Award from United European Gastroenterology (UEG). He is also a member of the International Organization For the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IOIBD).

Prof. Atreya’s research work focuses on the identification of response predictors, such as molecular endoscopy, and resistance mechanisms to biological therapies in IBD. He has also been published widely, with articles in peer-reviewed journals including Nature Medicine, The Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Gastroenterology and Gut.
